Air Conditioning Filters
Cleaning the filters in an air conditioning unit is an essential part of air conditioning maintenance. Keeping on top of cleaning the filters will ensure the unit works as efficiently as possible resulting in better heating or cooling with less current consumption. If the filters become dirty this can reduce the performance of the machine. It is recommended to clean the filters monthly but this should vary with the conditions in which the unit is installed. Some environments contain more dust and some are virtually dust free. The owner of the equipment should periodically inspect the filters and clean them as necessary. Most air conditioning units contain a plastic filter. This can easily be removed from the unit and cleaned under a running tap. Shake the filter dry and thoroughly dry with paper towels before fixing them back into the unit. Some units will contain smaller carbon filters which generally sit below the plastic filter, closer to the coils. These are none serviceable items and should be replaced every twelve months. High end units contain a high voltage 'plasma' filter which attract airborne particles which the standard filters can't remove. Isolate the power source to the unit and wait ten minutes for the high voltage charge to discharge. Generally the filter element can be withdrawn and carefully cleaned with a brush. Never touch the plasma filter when the unit is running or you could receive an electric shock. Next time you think your air conditioning unit is not operating to optimal performance, give the filters a clean!
